The global automotive industry continues to push the boundaries of new technology in order to keep pace with the growing demand for economical and sustainable mobility, and to satisfy its obligation for further reductions in CO2 emissions. As the price of oil continues to rise in line with increasing global consumption, the focus remains sharply on the advancement of vehicle powertrain efficiency to convert fuel energy into motion with minimal losses and the lowest possible emissions. While we are all more aware of our environmental responsibilities, it is the new legislation in all major markets which is pushing the vehicle manufacturers to escalate their efforts in the development of even cleaner gasoline and diesel engines, as well as various types of hybrid and full electric powertrain systems. With the conflicting objectives of increased power and torque with reduced fuel consumption and emissions, the need for advanced engine technologies has never been greater. The choice of vehicle power units is now much broader, with series and parallel hybrids, battery electric motor drives, and even fuel cell systems under intense development. However, the internal combustion engine, whether fuelled by gasoline, diesel, bio-fuel, CNG, or even hydrogen, will remain the most widely used source of motive power in all sizes of vehicle for many years to come. These conventional IC engines will continue to be downsized as specific power outputs are progressively increased and the smaller capacity IC engines will also be used to drive generators in electric vehicles to provide a 'range extender' function.
